Learn more about Mareem and the meaningful work she does at Grand Oaks in our Q&A.

Can you tell us about your professional and educational background?

Mareem: Originally from Ithaca, NY, I grew up in Senegal, West Africa, before moving to France to study business and administration at the University of Lille. Two years later, I continued my educational and professional journey in the United States, where I have built a meaningful career in senior living and hospitality.

What inspired you to work in senior living?

Mareem: I cared for my grandmother and developed a deep appreciation for helping others through that experience. Working in senior living allows me to honor her memory every day. I often see her in our residents, which gives my work purpose and heart.

How would you describe your role and responsibilities?

Mareem: As Sales Associate, I support the sales and marketing team by managing the database, preparing materials, coordinating move-in paperwork, and creating administrative files for new residents. I also lead resident orientations to ensure every move-in is smooth and welcoming, reflecting Grand Oaks’ commitment to compassion, professionalism, and excellence.

How do you welcome new residents and their families during the transition from potential to actual resident?

Mareem: I focus on helping families feel comfortable, informed, and supported every step of the way. Whether I am walking them through our resident handbook, answering questions, or introducing them to the department managers who will be their points of contact.

I also guide them on a tour of Grand Oaks so residents can start to feel at home. Along the way, I create a resident biography to share with the community, helping neighbors and staff connect with them and offer a warm, genuine welcome.

What steps do you take to ensure families feel informed and confident about pricing, contracts, and financial details?

Mareem: My approach is to ensure families feel informed, confident, and comfortable with every financial decision by providing clear information about pricing, levels of care, and available services.

When reviewing contracts, I guide families through all details, ensuring they fully understand costs and fees. I also highlight Grand Oaks’ commitment to high-quality care and our direct connection to Sibley Memorial Hospital.

What was the most memorable interaction you have had with a resident or their family?

Mareem: One of my most memorable experiences was with a resident’s sister who was anxious about her sibling’s move to Grand Oaks. She was worried about how her sister would adjust. I took extra time to guide them through every step, introduced them to our Director of Activities, Jordan Asrat, Front House Manager, Alvin Noval, and Mrs. Lewis, a friendly resident.

On move-in day, I made sure her favorite cookies and fruits were waiting in her room and asked our Activities Assistant to personally invite her to programs. A few days later, her sister came by to tell me how happy she was, smiling, attending activities, and truly settling in. These moments remind me why I love this work.

In your opinion, what makes Grand Oaks different from other senior living facilities?

Mareem: Grand Oaks feels like a family, not a facility. Every department works together to create an environment filled with warmth, safety, and compassion. It genuinely feels like home.

What is your advice for families considering senior living for their loved ones?

Mareem: I encourage families to communicate openly with their loved ones and make the decision together. Visit our community, meet our caring staff, and see firsthand what Grand Oaks has to offer.

Senior living does so much more than just meet care needs; it enhances quality of life, independence, and peace of mind. While the transition can be emotional, when approached with patience and care, it becomes a positive, rewarding new chapter.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Mareem: In my spare time, I enjoy praying, spending time with my family, cooking, and taking walks. I also love relaxing with my favorite TV shows; it is a simple way to relax and recharge after a fulfilling day.
