Laurie Henley, Executive Director, Joins National Center for Assisted Living Board

In October, Grand Oaks Executive Director Laurie Henley was elected by the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) to serve on the NCAL Board of Directors for the 2025/2026 term.
A Career Built on Service
It is a role Laurie was more than prepared for. Having served on the DC Health Care Association board for the past three years—first as vice chair and now as chair—Laurie was inspired to expand her service to the national level. Her more than a quarter-century of experience in assisted living, spanning a variety of community settings, provides her with a deep understanding of resident and staff needs, operational challenges, and opportunities for innovation.
“This role reflects my long-standing commitment—over 25 years—to serving seniors,” Laurie says. “I intend to represent the full diversity of our membership by ensuring their perspectives are heard, valued, and incorporated into NCAL’s priorities. My approach centers on fostering collaboration and addressing challenges through collective insight.”
Advocacy and Impact
As an At-Large Member, Laurie will actively participate in committees, contribute to strategic initiatives, and engage in advocacy efforts to elevate the services and support available to seniors in assisted living. She is committed to collaborating closely with fellow board members to drive meaningful progress for the field.
“Serving on the NCAL board provides a powerful platform to influence the broader landscape of assisted living,” Laurie says. “I am especially committed to advancing solutions to workforce challenges and advocating for greater recognition and support for our sector. Through this work, I hope to contribute to industry-wide improvements that elevate the well-being of seniors nationwide.”
Priorities for the Future
During her tenure, Laurie hopes to address workforce recruitment and retention, which remain some of the most urgent challenges facing assisted living communities nationwide. “I am also attentive to potential shifts in immigration policy, which may influence the availability of essential caregivers,” Laurie says. “It is critical that we advocate for sustainable, long-term solutions that support high-quality care for seniors.”
When thinking toward the future, Laurie is focused on the next generation: the baby boomers. “I anticipate a significant shift in resident expectations. Their desire for personalized experiences and hospitality-focused services will require our industry to adapt thoughtfully. I hope to see continued innovation in individualized care models that honor each resident’s unique preferences and lifestyle.”
A Milestone for Grand Oaks
Laurie’s election to the NCAL board is a meaningful milestone for Grand Oaks. It reflects Grand Oaks’ unwavering commitment to excellence in senior living and elevates its voice in the national conversation.
Joining the NCAL board allows Laurie to advocate more broadly for assisted living communities and strengthen the support systems that enhance the quality of life for Grand Oaks residents. This role positions Grand Oaks to contribute to and benefit from emerging best practices, ultimately enhancing residents’ experience and supporting dedicated staff.
“I am truly honored to have been elected to the NCAL board and deeply grateful for the confidence my colleagues have placed in me,” Laurie says in closing. “This opportunity strengthens my commitment to advancing the well-being of older adults. I firmly believe that through collaboration and shared purpose, we can create a future in which every senior receives the respect, care, and support they deserve.”
